Description

The course design program is a hands-on workshop that takes place over three weeks, with three half-day classes blended with online activities. Participants are introduced to a systematic approach and reflective process to design a new course or modify an existing course. Through this process participants develop specific and measurable course learning outcomes, plan effective teaching and learning activities and assessment strategies that are aligned with learning outcomes. The workshop incorporates in-class activities, small group work and discussions to generate ideas and strategies in an interdisciplinary environment. Participants leave with an overall course plan to further direct the development of the course or syllabus.

The course design process is beneficial for first-time instructors, for experienced instructors designing a new course, or for redesigning an existing course, and applies to courses taught face-to-face, online or in a blended environment.

Criteria
Write course learning outcomes
Participants write course learning outcomes for their individual courses and post the outcomes to the online discussion board for feedback from peers and facilitators.
Create a concept map of course content
Participants list all the course content which might include concepts, topics, theories etc. to create a concept map for their individual courses. Participants post the concept map to the online discussion board at the end of week 1 for feedback from peers and facilitators.
Assessment Blueprint
Using the assessment blueprint template found in the course design manual, participants plan the student assessment items for their individual courses. The entire chart must be completed with sufficient detail, including a list of course outcomes and assessment items, along with whether each item is formative, summative, or both, the weighting of the item, and indicating the level of Bloom's Taxonomy that is aligned with the course outcomes.
Course design blueprint
Participants complete the detailed course design blueprint by listing learning outcomes, student assessment strategies to measure outcomes, and teaching and learning activities to help students achieve learning outcomes. The entire chart must be completed with sufficient detail, including a description of the assessment and activities, levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, and with the demonstration of alignment between learning outcomes, student assessments and teaching and learning activities. Participants post their course blueprint at the end of week 2 to the online discussion board.
Final Consultation
Participants continue working on their course design blueprint and course evaluation plan after completing the face-to-face sessions. Participants meet with one of the facilitator for feedback on their course and evaluation plan and reflect on their design process within 6 months of the end of the program. The course design blueprint must be completed with sufficient detail and demonstration of strong alignment between learning outcomes, student assessments and teaching and learning activities.
Attendance and time limit
Participants of the program must attend all face-to-face sessions and complete the following tasks satisfactorily within 6 months of the end of the program in order to receive the badge.
